Goodbye Casey Paul!

The week before Thanksgiving the LPO North Valley farm manager, Casey Paul, turned to the farm crew with a little smile and said, "do you guys realize how much you're gonna miss me?"

Seeing as the majority of the guests at his goodbye party were dressed in full "Casey Paul-Garb"- complete with plaid shirts, baseball caps, and enormous beards, chances are that no one had quite realized how much of a loss Casey's departure will make in the LPO team. One thing's for sure though, he's left very big shoes for his successors. During his toast to Casey, even Farmer Monte laughingly reflected, "I had to hire four of you clowns in Casey's place just to keep things running smoothly...." Monte's good-humored remark was laughed at and taken with a grain of salt only by the newer members of the LPO farm crew as they gear up for the next big growing season.

As for Casey, the man with two first names, after three years of hard work and dedication has taken off into the wild yonder to start his own organic farm. He and his wife, Heidi, are even now scouring the country in search of their next home. We wish them all the luck in the world and hope that someday he'll disclose the location of his future farm-to-be so that we can send him all our dysfunctional interns to be whipped into shape!

LPO Art Sho!

Many of us here at Los Poblanos Organics have dug deep into our souls and are ready to share our artistic integrity with you......well, that's partly true- but mostly, we just wanted an excuse to have a great party! That's right folks, it's time for our farmy art show! The theme is "farm-inspired creations". I mean, Art, farmers, and snacks- what more could you want? So support both local artists AND local farmers in one glorious evening!!

Welcome to Our Farm Blog!

After speaking with many of our members, we have come to discover that many people (possibly hundreds) have been using the internet as a means to communicate ideas, facilitate dialogues, and spread the word about events. So, here at LPO we have taken the hint from our membership and decided to join the technology era. Being farmers, we are more used to grunting and rolling in the dirt as a means of communication... but have decided to take one more step out of the primordial slime and become a little more daring on this “internet-web-thingy”.

So, we are experimenting with ways to give our members more involvement and agency within Los Poblanos Organics. After finishing our Farmer’s Markets this season, many of our interns discussed their experiences on the farm and at the markets. A commonly reported occurance was how many of our members would stop in just to chat about all sorts of farm-related things: pest problems, recipes, global-agricultural politics, the organic movement in Albuquerque, or simply to chat about and show off their own LPO- inspired vegetable gardens. As much fun as this was for our interns, we all agreed that LPO should create a forum for our expanding membership beyond the weekly markets-and that this could be a place where these kinds of discussions could continue and be expanded from any location, at any time, and even during the most challenging weather events.

This blog will be one of the ways we are hoping to meet this need. We are hoping for a collaboration between our staff and members and to keep the conversation going about ‘anything farmy’ including:

-global and local agricultural issues,

-answering letters and questions from our wonderful constituency (what a coincidence, we have squash bug problems, too)!

-giving our members yet another place to exchange their delicious recipes (we know there has to be many more eggplant recipes after this last season)!

-and of course, most importantly, updates and information about LPO parties and events.

So, please get involved! Send us pictures, questions, links, suggestions, and anything else that you think might be an interesting idea for this space. We welcome your ideas and would be grateful for the feedback!
